Well, the count-down is on! Are you ready? This is what “being ready” means to me:
1. My entire bagpipe kit has been gone over. All items are clean, pressed, and ready to travel or to wear. I start at either the top (glengarry) or the bottom (brogues) and work my way to the other end. It’s a funny little routine that has served me well for a long time. If you need to, make a list.
2. I’ve checked my bagpipe over thoroughly. The bag is airtight. All joints are in good order. All reeds are secure and adjusted properly. Drone cords are tight and secure. Also check your chanter tape and replace any tape that is old and slipping around. Clean the residue off your chanter and apply a fresh piece of tape.
3. Emergency kit – One or more spare chanter reeds, Small roll of hemp. Chanter tape. Drone corks.
4. A couple of hand warmers. Otherwise, you can always warm your hands as you cradle your pipes with your right hand under your left arm-pit and vice versa.
5. Scarf. Maybe a toque.
6. Spare set of flashes.
7. Spare glengarry.
8. Flask. Fill the night before. Think of your friends!
9. Cash and one credit card for emergencies. Keep separately on your person.
10. A “return to” note in case things get out of hand.
Never take your hands off your bagpipe. Be careful around others, both for their protection and your bagpipe’s well-being. Have a good time, and look after your band mates. Be safe!
